Questionable Methods In Therapy

Safeguarding Therapy emphasizes the importance of asking questions of your therapist, educating yourself, and feeling empowered to make informed decisions about your therapy.

If you are ever wondering “why” during a session, you need to be brave, speak up and ask your therapist to explain their methodology.

Mental health therapy relies on professional, standardized methods to ensure you receive safe and effective treatment. However, it’s possible a therapist may use questionable methods that lack scientific support or have potential risks. Such methods can harm you instead of helping you.

“Any time you are confused or concerned about the methods and techniques used by your therapist, we advise you to ask your therapist to explain the process and why it is being used.”

Additionally, educating yourself about those methods and techniques through online research is always recommended. Feel free to stop participating in any method you are uncomfortable with and walk away, if necessary.

While the use of questionable methods is rare, it is always a good idea to stay vigilant. It is important for you to feel confident and understand what to expect in your therapy sessions. This way you are empowered to make informed decisions about your course of therapy.
